Weather Overview

Overall, the new moon means darker nights and stronger tidal movements, which can lead to increased fish activity, especially in the early mornings and late evenings. Thunderstorms are a daily threat in the afternoons, so keep an eye on the weather and be ready to take cover if needed. Mornings are generally your best bet for calm and productive fishin’ this week.

Offshore, seas are expected to stay relatively calm at 2-3 feet with light winds mostly from the south and southeast. Best get out early this week because PM t-storms are lighting up the forecast.

In the surf, expect a moderate chop with 1-2 ft waves. The southeast winds will help with water clarity, but an afternoon thunderstorm can mud things up in a hurry. With a new moon approaching on Friday, stronger tides and currents should also push bait closer to shore. This may be a great catchin’ opportunity for snook and tarpon on the beach.

The lagoon and inshore areas will benefit from mostly smooth waters thanks to light winds. Water clarity should improve if we don’t get too much rain, and the new moon’s tidal force should help get the water moving, which is good for business when it comes to bending a rod.

As far as freshwater goes, water levels in Stick Marsh and Headwaters remain relatively low, but that should not last long as we get into the thick of the rainy season. The water temps are hoverin’ around 86 degrees, so get out early before the summer heat turns off the bite. If you are out in heat of the day, look for the fish in greater depths or by punching through thick vegetation.

Summer’s Heating Up!

pat redfish

New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon have been heating up with some great fishing this past week. We have had multiple boat slams come boat side with trout, redfish and snook. We have even had the occasional flounder make an appearance. The bait continues to be spread out from Daytona Beach south into the Lagoon. Look for the bait pods and structure as the fish will not be to far away.

Early starts have been the truck lately as we have had some extremely hot days along with afternoon thunderstorms. The weather looks to be about the same heading into next week so I foresee the bite continuing to be strong.

Weekly Fishing Report

This week, I shifted my focus from mangroves to dock fishing in pursuit of redfish. Seeking wind-protected spots, I discovered that fishing closer to shore in the morning and gradually moving to deeper waters as the sun rose yielded the best results. When the sun was high, I targeted docks with boat lifts, capitalizing on the shade they provided for the fish to escape the heat. Don’t overlook the areas between docks, as they can be equally productive. My go-to lures were the Mirrolure Lil John and a small jerk shad, which I retrieved with slow, soft twitches and occasional pauses to entice strikes. Adjust your retrieve to suit the conditions, but this approach proved successful for me. The dock fishing transition paid off, and I landed some great redfish!

Baitfish Hit or Miss on Beach

jim ross king

The weather has been cooperating, but it has been hit or miss for baitfish along the beaches over the last week. The reefs and wrecks in 60 to 90-feet of water are holding king mackerel, barracuda, red snapper, and shark when we’ve been able to find baitfish to slow troll over these structures. Tarpon action has been best along the beaches from Satellite southward to the Sebastian Inlet. Hopefully the bait schools will get more consistent over the next week and we can have an easier time catching fish without having to run 25 miles to get bait. If you’re looking to get out and catch some fish give us a call today at 321-505-821.

Fishing can be Work

whiting - surf fishing

I hope everyone had a great week of fishing and is looking forward to the Fourth of July!

Last week wasn’t outstanding in terms of catches, but it was filled with lots of whiting, ladyfish, and black drum. Those pesky catfish loved the dirty water, and you had to fight through them to get to the better fish. There were a few days with patches of floating weeds but it was fishable for the most part. I think everyone has picked through some salad before. If you are a shark fisherman, you were in luck—they were biting every bait you could think of, bonito, mullet, ladyfish, you name it was getting hit.

This week, the waves are going to stay flat at a cool 1-2 feet. We still have a southeast wind for most of the week, not blowing super hard but just enough to put a light chop on the water, which tends to make fishing a bit better than flat calm waters. Using standard pompano rigs will be your best bet, rigged with some frozen shrimp or clams. Don’t be afraid to throw a fish finder rig or knocker rig with some live shrimp or finger mullet, as there have been some nice redfish and snook being caught. Don’t fish too far out for them though because they are in close chasing the bait that is moving along the beaches.

I hope everyone has a great holiday! Fish hard, party hard, and most of all, tight lines!

Decent Week on the Beach!

Decent Week on the Beach!

  • tarpon
  • snapper

We had a decent week of fishing the beach. Bait is still scarce but its starting to show up in small numbers. Greenies around the inlet and pilchards inside have been fairly consistent. We fished for some snapper off the beach on the inshore reefs and some tarpon and big jacks last week. Plenty of big jacks till the NE winds came on later in the week. The tarpon thinned out and went out deep due to the rough seas last week, but have started to show back up later in the week and weekend. Not sure where the NE winds have been coming from but they definitely slow down the bite.

Looks like another week of fairly calm seas and light winds so the beach fishing should be pretty good again this week. Look for Kingfish and jacks around bait pods if you can find them and scatter tarpon as well. May even get lucky and find a few free swimming cobra running the beaches around the bait pods.

Puttin’ THEM on it!

The Ocean Obsession (OO) which is based out of Sunrise Marina in Port Canaveral has continued to keep their customers on the fish. This past week was no exception with a number of different species being caught. Lane snapper, mangrove snapper and mutton snapper were all caught this past week in addition to some bonus species like cobia and dolphin. These are some fantastic fighting fish and great to eat too! If you have been wanting to get offshore and catch some quality fish, the captain and crew of the OO will take good care of you.

There’s Action if you can Find Clean Water

sebastian inlet fishing report

Good morning all my Sebastian Inlet fans and fishermen/gals! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! So, here we go off on another adventure into what’s happening at the inlet. For the most part, again, it was kind of slow due to the dirty water present all weekend, but there was some action to be had if you found some clean water. The north side was the cleanest, whereas the south side was the dirtiest. So that is where all the action was over the weekend from Friday on.

North Jetty

At the tip on the outgoing tide was producing some nice catch and release snook on live shrimp and small croakers. Also being caught at the tip on both tides were some small mangrove snappers on cut bait, greenies and live shrimp, and mixed in were a couple nice sheepshead and spot tail pins. The snook bite on the incoming was non-existent, but they were there, you could see the massive school of them on the inside. The water was that clean last Friday you could see what’s around. On the beach side for those fishing cut and live shrimp, whiting and catfish were the action over the weekend, both tides, with a few small mangroves around the pilings and rocks. Further up the way towards the bridge, on the incoming there were some nice catch and release redfish being caught on small live croakers and majorras. I chatted with a couple guys I know that fish that area, and they said between the three of them they had caught and released about 10 of them. Also along this shoreline, same tide there have been some mangrove snappers being caught on live shrimp and cut bait. Saturday when I was down, there was a huge school of mullet come down the beach, and with them was a massive school of big jack crevalle tearing them up!! Unfortunately, nobody hooked up with any. So that’s pretty much for this side.

South Jetty

On this side on both tides, it was pretty much a total mess!! The water was very dirty most everywhere you went, especially on the incoming tide where it sucked all the dirty water back into the inlet all the way back to the t-dock and beyond. About the only fish I saw being caught over the weekend were lots of catfish, jack crevalle and blue runners, all being caught on shrimp, live or dead, and cut baits. I did see a couple of small catch and release snookies caught on the incoming tide along the shoreline where there was some clean pockets of water. Live majorras and croakers were the baits of choice. Also, along this shoreline area, some mangrove snappers are possible in the cleaner water. Small live baits will do the trick for them.

T-Dock Area

Back here it has been really slow, not very many anglers back here fishing at all. That doesn’t say that there aren’t any fish back here, but if you find some cleaner water, and on an incoming tide, some snapper and catch and release snook are possible. Also if there are a lot of the greenies back here, spanish mackerel are a possibility too. Not to mention, with the schools of mullet coming in the inlet, the big jack crevalle should be around chasing them for some action.

Surf Area, both sides

I haven’t seen hardly anyone out on the beaches fishing, due to the low tides being in the morning time frame, but there have been a few, and all they are catching are catfish, and a few nice whiting. The north side has been the cleanest area, and the south like I mentioned earlier, has been a dirty mess. Well, that’s all I have for now guys and gals, if you want any more up to the minute report on what’s going on down at the inlet, the Inlet Bait and Tackle shop FINALLY has a phone where you can call and check on what’s going on, and if the have any live bait! The number is 321-471-9489. If you call them on Tuesday and Wednesday, you will talk to Rose, and the rest of the week when you call, you will talk to Erica, the “snook queen”, who manages the shop. Give them a call when you need, tell them snookman hooked them up!! Have a great week everyone. Snookman.

Slow Bite in Lagoon & Stick Marsh

Slow Bite in Lagoon & Stick Marsh

stick marsh bass

It was a slow bite on both the Lagoon and Stick Marsh. The Lagoon gave up some small trout and mangrove snapper but nothing much more. We did find a spot where there were lots of snook, all were upper slot fish but they had nothing to do with our offerings. The Stick Marsh was just about as slow as well. We did manage to boat 12 bass when they were schooling up on shad but the schools were much smaller than the last few outings there. Lipless crankbaits were the better lure due to the fact you can get a much longer cast with it when the schools popped up. Last week’s back side of a full moon I feel had much affected our bite.

Everyone take care and caution this upcoming week for the July 4th celebrations. The waters will be crowded, don’t forget the Life Jackets.

KAYAK FISHING REPORT

Let's Get Weird

Let's Get Weird

Happy Monday Spacefish!

I hope everyone is well, and enjoying their summer! It’s been H-O-T out there, but along with the air temps, the bite has been red hot as well!

Launch Spot

For this trip report, I launched from the Eau Gallie Boat Ramp- once I launched, I went under the eastern causeway bridge (the short one), and then went north along the eastern shoreline until I got adjacent to Dragon Point, then I went over and fished around the point, then I went south again, and spent a few hours fishing the docks and shoreline, before calling it a day.

It’s Getting Weird Out There

Recently I have started using some of the products from Clarity Lures – which is based in Cocoa. They make a phenomenal product, and they donate 6% of their profits to non-profits such as Captains for Cleanwater, and various other groups that are working diligently to clean up Florida’s Water Ways! A cause we can all get behind! One of the hot colorways for me recently has been “Weird Water.” On this particular trip, this color was highly productive, I used the 3 inch chunk on a ⅛ oz jighead, and I used the Fluke on a 4/0 Owner Twistlock hook, with a ⅛ oz weight. If you’re interested in supporting a local bait company, that supports Florida’s waters, and catch a lot of fish in the process, then check out Clarity Lures!

The House of the Dragon

Speaking of Weird Water…. Imagine discovering a fallen river dragon while out on a misty morning fishing outing. I always wondered what happened to Annie the Dragon, when my kids ask me what happened to the Dragon, I always tell them “she belongs to the stars now.” In all actuality, she is laying facedown in the water right off Dragon Point, RIP Annie. We lost a lot of good men (female dragon statues) out there. If you want to learn more about one of Brevard County’s fallen landmarks, and become a little more knowledgeable about weird Florida history, check out this article from Space Coast Daily.

Snook Like Getting Weird

Productive Area - Water Flow, Mangroves, and Dock

Productive Area - Water Flow, Mangroves, and Dock

I able to catch two quality slot sized Hook, and 2 more smaller ones on the Weird Water colorway Fluke – I was finding productive areas and catching tons of schoolie Trout, but I was able to use the skipability of the Clarity fluke to skip into tight areas. When fishing areas with a lot of residential docks and man made structure, I have always had success with Snook in those areas where docks and mangroves meet, usually the bites are generated by skipping back into a shady spot and putting it back where the Snook hangs. Very rarely do I ever see any Snook hanging outside of structure and cover, and when I do, they usually have no interest in eating. When I say usually, I mean never lol, at least for me any way. Usually they just stare at me, and when I cast to them they either spook off, or they just continue to stare and laugh at the idiot in the kayak trying to target them.

Pictured above is one of the productive areas I mentioned. I would start on the outer edges targeting the Trout that are schooled up around the areas the depth changes, the Snook were in tighter tucked in around the bottom of the dock and the mangroves. When you have an area like this with depth change, and different forms of structure, it can be highly productive, especially when the winds is pushing water through the dock. The water was pushing in from the south, so I posted on the north side of this area. Pictured below are some Snook that were caught on the Fluke throughout the day.

Trout Bonanza

I caught a ton of small Trout on this trip, whenever I would catch one, I would stop and pick the area apart. The smaller ones like to school up on depth changes with moving water, it can be a lot of fun to sit in an areas and catch a good handful of Juvie Trout, these are one of the most reliable inshore species to target in the Banana River area because the little ones are aggressive and it can turn a slow day around to catch a good number of these schoolie’s. I tend to do better with Trout when I bounce a small soft plastic on a jighead in these areas. On this trip they tore up the Weird Water Chunk (3 inch paddletail) from Clarity Lures, and I also caught a few on the Clarity Ned Shrimp on a ⅛ oz Mission Fishin’ Chartreuse Jighead. The colorway I used for the Ned Shrimp was Pocket Penny, which is a great crustacean color!

Conclusion

When I saw the Weird Water color offered by Clarity Lures, I just had to give it a shot, one of my favorite and most oft said phrases as I navigate through a life of raising a family, coaching high school football, teaching high schoolers, and being a semi-professional fishing dude, and doing all of these in the state of Florida is… “it’s going to get weirder.”

I don’t care what it is, whatever it is, I promise before it will get weirder. Now you are probably asking yourself as you read this, “what does that even mean?” – to that I say, it means whatever you want it to mean. However, this color rocks, and it has been getting smoked by Snook, Trout, and Redfish as I have been out fishing with it.

The Eau Gallie Causeway is a convenient launch spot, that is in close proximity to some areas that hold fish, I don’t fish this areas as often as I should but everytime I have, I have caught some combination of Trout, Snook, and Redfish with our friend Jack Crevalle and his girlfriend the Ladyfish mixed in as well.

kayaks by boThank you for taking the time to read this report, and thank you to Kayaks By Bo for being our Paddle Partner! It’s been blazing hot out there people, make sure you are taking a cooler full of cold waters, and Gatorade out there with you! But if you can stand the heat, the bite is hot too!

Tight lines everyone. Until next time!

Summer Pattern in Full Effect

seatrout summer lagoon

The weather has finally leveled out here in the Central Florida area with our warm days and afternoon thunderstorms. With this summer time pattern in effect it has also put our fish into their summer time patter as well. The redfish have been chewing well both in the backwaters of New Smyrna and in the shallows of Mosquito Lagoon. The trout have also been making an appearance with several coming boat side this past week. We have also had a fairly good snook bite along with a mix of black drum, as well. The weather looks to be stable moving into next week so I foresee the bite continuing on through the following week.
